Only six people have held the title of GM Design Chief in General Motors’ history, with Ed Welburn being the latest. Over the course of his career holding the prestigious position, Welburn has revamped the vehicle lineups of several brands underneath GM’s umbrella, from Buick to GMC. Projects Welburn has contributed to include the Buick Avista, Cadillac ATS-V and CTS-V, and Chevy Corvette.

Because of his significant contributions to General Motors, Ed Welburn is now being the first-ever recipient of the Detroit Free Press Automotive Difference Maker Lifetime Achievement Award. Founded by the Detroit Free Press to honor the achievements of individuals in the automobile industry who positively influence their company and community, the award recognizes Welburn’s creation of a new design team that has opened studios under the GM label all over the world.

As GM Design Chief, Ed Welburn is credited with breaking down racial barriers in the American corporate system as well as continuing a long tradition of design excellence in the US automotive industry. He will join five other individuals on March 15th at the Detroit Athletic Club to receive the honor publicly. Learn more at Gateway Buick GMC of St. Louis, MO.
